Attractions in the Upper Keys
Located at MM 85.5, Bayside
This is another site created by excavation during the building of Flagler's railroad extensions during the 1912-1930's era. The area now known as the Windley Key Fossil Reef State Geologic Site was quarried to expose fossilized coral reef, which is what forms the foundation of the land in the Florida Keys. There's a trail guide for visitors to use while exploring the four different trails here. The guide is a good idea because it will point out things to you which you won't want to miss: fossilized imprints of ancient shells and little marine life fossils embedded in the bedrock walls of the quarry.
Windley Key Fossil Reef State Geologic Site is open Thursday through Monday 8am to 5pm. There is a very small admission charge, and they offer self-guided tours or tours with a guide, which are offered once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
