Attractions in Key West
Located at the corner of Whitehead and South Streets
This is perhaps the most popular photo-op spot in Key West, since it represents just how far you've come when you get to this spot in Key West. You are standing further south than anyone else in the continental 48 states, so very close to Cuba. It's actually a huge red, yellow, green and white buoy marker on the street, facing the ocean, right on the ocean. At high tide the waves will splash up near it on the sidewalk, and during a hurricane you might see dramatic shots of the Southernmost Point on the weather channel, being bombarded by waves in pre-storm fury of violence. There is usually at least a small crowd here, even at night, so don't plan on a personal encounter with the buoy. Number one photo-op, however, and even though it may feel tacky and touristy at the moment, you'll be glad you had your picture taken in front of it, when you get back home later.
