This historic cemetery is located on the grounds of the Cheeca Lodge, but access is not limited to guests of the Lodge. This piece of Florida Keys history was designated as a historic site by the Historical Association of Southern Florida in the late 1980's. It contains gravestones of what are called the "Founding Fathers" of the city of Islamorada: the Pinders, Russells and Parkers. The stones, like many things in Islamorada, were damaged in the hurricane of 1935, but they are still there. There's one statue-esque gravestone, that of Dolores Pinder, that ended up on the highway after the storm, with only a broken arm and wing. She was put back up over the gravesite and you can see her today, with the other stones, all bordered by a white picket fence. There were once a Methodist Church and a schoolhouse on the site, but both were destroyed in the hurricane.

Drive into Cheeca Lodge grounds and walk to the beach, where you should look for a white picket fence. It's open to the public and free.
