Attractions in Key West
Located in the block bordered by Angela, Frances, Olivia Street, and Windsor Lane
This cemetery is set right in the heart of Key West, serving as an ever-present reminder of the historic and human element to this tropical paradise getaway. Tombstones here seem to compete with each other to gather the most visitors and fame for those they represent, with eptaphs that seem exist to entertain the visitor. You'll see things like I told you I was sick and Devoted fan of Julio Iglesias written on the stones, which is why the Key West Cemetery makes an interesting quirky walking tour for tourists looking for some history and charm.
It's maintained by the Historic Florida Keys Foundation, who product a self-guided tour pamphlet, with a key to translating some of the symbols you'll see on various stones, as well as short bios on some of the more locally famous deceased buried here. You can pick up this free Historic Key West City Cemetery self-guided tour pamphlet in the Florida Room at the public library on Fleming Street in Key West. It's also available at the Chamber of Commerce in Mallory Square. They also give an hour-long guided tour on Tuesdays and Thursdays, donation requested. Meet at 9:30am at the gate for this one.
