This wildlife rescue center is run with love and donations for the rescue, repair, and re-introduction and sometimes permanent housing of injured birds in the Florida Keys. There is also a small section for orphaned baby racoons, who are returned to the wild after one year of living it up here at the Center. As a wonderful side benefit, the Wild Bird Center also makes for one the most interesting and unique visitor destinations in the area. Wonderfully homespun and non-commercial, the Center allows visitors to amble through the wooden walkways that wind amongst the cages, and view the birds who live there. Some are in cages, but many hang out in the lush trees surrounding the cage areas and pens. The ask for a donation, and there's a little wooden box at the entrance where you can slip $5 or so to help out the cause. If you happen to get lucky and arrive at feeding time, you'll see pelicans lined up in a row across the entire roof of the small buildings that house the pens, and you'll see egrets swoop down to try and get the little fish thrown at them by the worker/volunteer. It's a great show! It's open every day of the week during daylight hours. This is for sure just one of the most wonderful unique places in the Keys, for every member of your family or group to enjoy.
